Springdale is a strong, sharply defined place. Here the southwest cuts to the quick, and the earth knows all the angles. Jutting crags of red sandstone break the eternally blue sky. This is a place to set your foot, fix your eye, and run your fingers through the sand. It’s a massage for your senses with a message for your ears. Every sound is framed by the all-absorbing silence. As the sun sets and the evening stars begin to glow overhead, one senses unlimited possibilities. Welcome to Springdale–open your heart to the magical landscape.
From the days of John Wesley Powell’s expedition here in 1871, Springdale has been host to a variety of explorers, adventurers, pioneers, entrepreneurs, and artists. Today, nearly three million visitors a year journey to Springdale to experience the cutting edge of Zion.
Springdale is the gateway community at the entrance to Zion National Park. Here modern day explorers establish their base camps at our bed and breakfasts, our (soon-to-be) 500 motel rooms, or at the more than 500 campsites in the immediate vicinity. From your room or your tent you can see fanciful Eagles Crags, magnificent Canaan Mountain, the noble Watchman, the towering East and West Temples, and haunting Mt. Kinesava. Embraced by the beckoning wilderness, you can saunter forth in any direction and enter an incomparable landscape. Hawks and eagles soar overhead, deer dance over the bushes, and cottonwoods grow tall by the Virgin River.
Journeys into Zion National Park can inspire you for a lifetime–just ask the lucky people who live here! But if you feel like wandering further, within an hour’s drive are St. George, Cedar City, Kanab, Coral Pink Sand Dunes, Kolob, Lava Point, Grafton, Smithsonian Butte, Cedar Breaks, Snow Canyon, and more. Within two hours are Bryce Canyon National Park, Brian Head Ski Resort, and Lake Powell. And it is only a little further to the Grand Canyon . . .
Springdale is a year-round destination resort with a variety of outdoor activities: hiking, swimming, tennis, and rentals available for bicycling, tubing, hiking and horseback-riding. In the midst of a natural rural setting you can enjoy many cultural activities, entertainment and nightlife such as a giant-screen Cinemax movie, a 1,000-seat outdoor amphitheater, a museum, art galleries, bookstores, a playhouse, family concerts, a folklife festival, and a bar featuring live blues, rock, jazz or folk music. Our active arts council, Z-Arts!, sponsors creativity workshops, concerts, and poetry readings.
Springdale is a haven for artists and writers. Many galleries and shops carry paintings, photographs, masks, pottery and jewelry by local residents. Several shops carry antiques, collectibles, rocks, gems and high quality Native American arts and crafts. Good food is a must for the adventurous traveler, and several restaurants serve gourmet southwest cuisine, family style, continental, Mexican, deli, steaks, hamburgers, Chinese, pasta, pizza, bagels, and cappuccino. A fruit market sells locally grown organic produce.
Springdale is a natural nexus, a magical meeting place for creative minds. Conferences, retreats, symposiums, festivals, and other gatherings take place here year-round. A new conference center is available for meetings, and an artist’s retreat is in the works.
With mild and beautiful winters, Springdale welcomes you all year. Come for the adventure, the quiet, the beauty, the inspiration. Join the many unique individuals who reside here, who are drawn by Zion Canyon’s irresistible magnetism, and who cooperate together to build, in the words of Wallace Stegner, “a society to match its scenery.”
