Rockville Utah 1926 is a work for string quartet based on thematic material from Phillip Bimstein’s Garland Hirschi’s Cows (1990). The year in the title honors Garland Hirschi’s birthdate, and the music aims to express daily life in his pastoral community.
Rockville Utah 1926 was commissioned for the Abramyan String Quartet as part of New Residencies, a national program of Meet The Composer supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts, The James Irvine Foundation, the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, Inc., AT&T, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
It was recorded by the Abramyan String Quartet and released on Phillip Bimstein’s Larkin Gifford’sHarmonica CD, Starkland, ST-214.
